Native American Heritage Month

Every November, we recognize Native American Heritage Month, also known as National American Indian Heritage Month. This celebration, officially designated in 1990 under President George H. W. Bush, is a time to honor the rich histories, diverse cultures, and profound contributions of Native American communities across the United States.

Throughout this month, we have a unique opportunity to reflect on the challenges Native Americans have faced—both historically and today. It is also a time to celebrate the enduring strength and resilience of Native American peoples, recognizing their significant role in shaping our nation’s history and culture.

How to Celebrate Native American Heritage Month

  1. Enjoy and Learn About Indigenous Art
    • Native American art is a vibrant expression of culture, tradition, and history. From paintings to pottery, jewelry, and textiles, Indigenous art offers a window into the lives and stories of Native communities. If you aren’t close to a museum that features Native American art, you can also check out artists online. Wendy Red Star is an Apsaalooke contemporary multimedia artist from Billings, Montana. Another Native American artist to learn more about is Woody Crumbo, who was a citizen of the Potawatomi Nation.
  2. Follow Native Americans on Social Media
    • Social media provides a platform for Native voices to share their perspectives, culture, and experiences. Following Native American creators can deepen your understanding of contemporary Indigenous issues and celebrations.
  3. Learn About Native American Good News
    • Native American communities are thriving in various sectors, from entrepreneurship to environmental stewardship. Take time to seek out and celebrate their positive contributions to our society.
  4. Read Works by Indigenous Authors and Poets
    • Indigenous literature offers a rich narrative that reflects the lived experiences, history, and futures of Native Americans. Some renowned Native authors include Joy Harjo, Louise Erdrich and Tommy Orange.
