Happy Day of Appreciation for Grand-Family Heads of Household!

The Center for Family and Community Engagement (CFACE) is proud to acknowledge the hard-work and dedication of Dr. Glenda Clare, our Family Partner Specialist. Through her commitment to kinship issues, she has been able to effect real change in North Carolina. When it comes to grand-family households, Dr. Clare wants people to know more than she did when she raised her cousin’s child. In her work outside CFACE, Dr. Clare educates and hosts a support group for members of grand-families. Hopefully, her newest book Don’t Adopt that Child: What Grandparents and Other Relatives Need to Know BEFORE They Assume Custody will launch by the end of December, 2019. Read more below about the official proclamations from Stephen M. Schewel, Mayor of the City of Durham, Wendy Jacobs, Chair of the Durham Board of County Commissioners, and Roy Cooper, Governor of the State of North Carolina that made the dream of having a day of appreciation for heads of grand-families a reality. Way to go, Dr. Clare! Thank you for your continued devotion to making a difference in the lives of others!

More than 89,000 North Carolina children and youth are grand-family members. The head of a grand-family (grandparent, sibling, aunt, uncle, cousin or close family friend) steps in to raise the child of a relative when the birth parent is unable or unwilling to parent. For every 29 North Carolina children/youth living with a relative only one (1) is in foster care and eligible to receive supportive services such as health care, mental health services, financial assistance or respite. The heads of grand-families are involved because they want to keep the children safe, however it takes a village to raise a child/youth. Support is needed.

Governor Roy Cooper, Durham County Commissioners and the Mayor of Durham have proclaimed Friday, November 22, 2019 as a “Day of Appreciation for Grand-Family Heads of Household,” please take the time to acknowledge the heads of grand-families. Let them know that their efforts are appreciated. Thank them for saving more than $6.5 billion taxpayer dollars each year.

Contact Dr. Glenda Clare if you would like to receive one or more certificates of appreciation to give to the heads of grand-families in your network. She can be contacted at itml@fragilefamiliesnetwork.com
