Each March, Social Work Month celebrates the impact of social workers and the vital role they play in supporting individuals, strengthening families and building healthier communities. First recognized in 1963, the month is a time to increase public awareness of the profession and honor the millions of people social workers serve every day. (NASW)
The 2026 theme is “Uplift. Defend. Transform.” It highlights the heart of social work practice and the profession’s ongoing commitment to human dignity and social justice. Social workers uplift people by meeting them where they are, recognizing strengths and helping individuals and communities build resilience and hope. They defend the rights of vulnerable populations by advocating for fair access to services, challenging discrimination and protecting essential social safety net programs. They also work to transform systems by addressing root causes of inequality through policy research leadership and direct practice.
This theme reflects the reality that social workers are on the frontlines in schools, hospitals, child welfare agencies, community organizations and government, helping people navigate trauma, mental health challenges, poverty and systemic barriers. Guided by a strong Code of Ethics, the profession stands for equity, human rights and the well-being of all people especially during times of social and economic change.
Social Work Month is not only a celebration, but also a call to action! It encourages social workers and communities to share stories, highlight advocacy efforts and recognize the transformative power of the profession. With more than 800,000 social workers across the United States, the field continues to grow and shape a more just and compassionate society. (NASW)
